For a month, the NGO \u00abEcosphera\u00bb searched for trees with unique stories that have historical, cultural or ecological significance for the community. In total, we identified 16 trees for the national selection to participate in the international competition \u00abEuropean Tree of the Year\u00bb. Everyone can participate in the vote, but we will take into account only unique votes.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Ukraine took part in this competition for the first time, presenting an apple tree from Sumy region, which is already over 220 years old. In total, more than 14 thousand people voted for the apple tree colony. According to the results of the competition, the Ukrainian tree took third place!<\/p>\n

We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the stories of the trees and vote for the tree that, in your opinion, should represent Ukraine at the competition \u00abEuropean Tree of the Year\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"1. The century-old oak tree named \u00abPrinces Lubomirsky\u00bb<\/strong> has great historical and cultural value for the residents of the Rivne city community. The tree grows in an area that was once an oak-hornbeam forest on the northeastern outskirts of the city of Rivne.

According to legend, under this oak, Hetman of Ukraine Bogdan Khmelnytskyi, on his way to the Berestets battlefield, held a meeting with Cossack colonels.<\/span>

\"\"6. The largest specimen of Weymouth pine<\/strong> outside North America grows near the village of Turya Remeta, on Magurycha Mountain, in Transcarpathia. The tree has its own name “President”, its height exceeds 50 m, the crown span is 18 m, the diameter is 1.5 m, and its age is over 150 years. A pine of such size is rare even for its natural range in North America.<\/span>

7. <\/strong>An oak tree<\/strong> that is over 100 years old grows in the Ivankivska community. During an enemy attack in February 2022, the tree saved the lives of three soldiers by taking the blow that split it in half. Currently, volunteer arborists are treating it and trying to save its life. Part of the tree has recovered.

8. \u00abThe Thousand-Year Oak\u00bb<\/strong> is the oldest tree in the Lviv region, which took root on the territory of the local church of St. Michael in the village of Veryn. In 1984, the centuries-old oak was granted the status of a botanical monument. The tree has several hollows, one of which is so large that it resembles a cave. This tree is truly impressive in its mighty size.

During the Mongol-Tatar attack, local residents could hide in the tree, which saved their lives. People have not forgotten about this tree and to this day call it the savior elm. The trunk circumference is about 5 meters.<\/span>

10. Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior L.) <\/strong>in the territory of the Rivne urban territorial community.
\nThe sociological value of the ash tree is primarily determined by its important historical and cultural significance. After all, this tree is located in the suburbs, where at the end of the 18th century, according to the project of architect Jan Jakub Bourguignon, the park of the Palace of Princes Lubomirski was laid out.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The tree grows at the northwestern end of the Kristera Hill park in the Podilskyi district of Kyiv. The oak is about 400 years old with a girth of 4.3 meters and a height of 25 meters. It was taken under protection by the decision of the Kyiv City Council of November 27, 2009.<\/span>

13. The Josephine Oak<\/strong> is the oldest oak in Ukraine. It is located within the Sarny district of the Rivne region, northwest of the village of Hlynne, on the territory of the botanical natural monument “Josephine’s Cottage”, in the middle of a place called Radzyvilivska Pushcha.

15. Bogdan’s Oak<\/strong> is located in the Cherkasy region in the village of Velyka Burimka in the western part of the park. The oak was struck by lightning twice, so some of the branches burned. This tree has historical significance – according to legend, in 1654 B. Khmelnytsky passed by here and left a mark on the oak from a red-hot copper seal.
