Within the framework of the project «Constructing bird sanctuaries to develop protected wetlands areas in Zakarpattia» botanical surveys were conducted at the Fornosh and Salva reservoirs in July and August. The surveys were carried out by Roman Kish, Ph.D, Associate Professor of the Department of Botany of Uzhhorod National University.
Studies have found 7 species of vascular plants on Fornosh and 36 on Salva. These include red-listed species, regional red-listed species and species protected by the Bern Convention.
In addition to Phragmites australis and Typha angustifolia, that grow on both reservoirs, Fornosh is also the habitat of the following species:
- Bolboschoenus maritimus agg;
- Trapa natans, listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine;
- Cyperus michelianus, Spergularia rubra and Lindernia procumbens – species that are rare in Zakarpattia and included in the Regional list of vascular plant species subject to special protection in Zakarpattia region».
Lindernia procumbens is also listed in the Resolution 6 of the Bern Convention as a species requiring special conservation measures.
Salva reservoir is represented by a significant variety of species, namely:
- Acorus calamus, Stachys palustris, Butomus umbellatus, Lythrum salicaria, L. virgatum, Alisma plantago-aquatica, Scutellaria galericulata, Persicaria hydropiper, Eleocharis palustris;
- Salix cinerea, Prunus spinosa, Crataegus monogyna, Sambucus nigra L., Populus tremula, Rosa sp., Swida sanguinea, Euonymus europaeus, adventive Acer negundo;
- Dipsacus laciniatus, Rubus caesius, Urtica dioica, Galium aparine, Humulus lupulus, Calystegia sepium, Solanum dulcamara;
- Carex vesicaria, C. riparia, Glyceria maxima, Rumex maritimus, Lysimachia vulgaris, Lycopus europaeus, Potentilla reptans, Persicaria mitis.
We continue to study the biodiversity of the entire wetland complex of these reservoirs.
