In 2016, Uzhhorod joined the European initiative of the Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy. In 2018, the Uzhhorod City Council, in cooperation with the Ecosphere NGO, developed and adopted the SEAPC of Uzhhorod by 2030. The city’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan, which commits the city to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, has become a key strategic and programmatic document for the further development of Uzhhorod in the energy sector.

As the Basic Emission Inventory has shown, the main sector of energy consumption in the city and therefore the source of emissions is the privately owned housing sector. The city also has a large number of private vehicles, the city produces a large amount of MSW, of which only 14-20% goes to recycling as a raw material. Thus, the achievement of the goals by 2030 depends on the residents’ understanding of the substance of the Covenant of Mayors, as well as the commitments made by the city.

With this project, we are engaging young people in our energy efficiency activities, and are finding out that they are ready to change their daily habits in the city to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through this project, we inform local residents about climate change issues and causes. The project is aimed at residents of cities and local authorities.
