Policy paper “Ecosystem services and hydropower: pilot application of European instruments in the river basins of the Eastern Partnership countries. Case of Ukraine” is a review of the European experience of mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services, in particular the modern typology of ecosystems and ecosystem services, mapping tools and assessment methods. The possibilities and identified obstacles in mapping and assessing ecosystems and their services to determine their value and losses under the influence of hydropower were demonstrated on the example of the pilot basin of the Uzh River in Transcarpathia region. Recommendations for the introduction of mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services in the procedures of strategic environmental assessment and environmental impact assessment were developed in order to take into account the integrated impact of hydropower programs and projects.

The project benefits from support through the EaP Civil Society Forum Re-granting Scheme (FSTP) and is funded by the European Union as part of its support to civil society in the region. Within its Re-granting Scheme, the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (EaP CSF) supports projects of its members that contribute to achieving the mission and objectives of the Forum.

The aim of the project is to strengthen the implementation of the ecosystem approach and ecosystem services concepts in the hydropower development on the national and local levels of EaP countries as a component of European Green Deal – a new growth strategy.
